...APPLICATIONS

I.D.A.O. has been used in various fields as shown in the applications listed below:

Open Source Simple Computer for Agriculture in Rural Areas (OSCAR)

The OSCAR web application, designed as a decision support system to identify and suggest control measures for some of the most common weed species of the Indo-Gangetic Plains. The application is developed using foss tools such as MySQL for database, SVG for vector graphics and PHP as the scripting language.

Biodiversity Informatics and Co-Operation in Taxonomy for Interactive shared Knowledge base (BIOTIK)

The project aims at creating a first network of South Asian and European partners interested in sharing their knowledge in applied computer science for taxonomy and in the preparation of two CD-ROMs for identifying trees species in two “hotspots” of biodiversity: the rain forests in the Western Ghats of India and in the northern Annamite Mountain range of Lao PDR. It will provide a major capacity-building tool for young researchers and trainees, and serve as a major aid for the conservation of biodiversity in these two hotspots of biodiversity.

Open Source for Weed Assessment in Lowland Paddy Fields (OSWALD)

The project envisages the initiation and sustenance of cooperation between the South East Asian and the European agronomist communities. Indeed, it brings together and assimilates into a knowledge base the kind of information, which will be of significant use to the farming community. Such an approach of a decision-making tool made available in rural areas and accessing a centralized database through the Internet can be extended to other agriculture-related needs like pest management, and in a more general sense, to give access to ecological, meteorological, agronomic and economic information (market prices, monsoon forecast, cost of inputs, etc.) that may help farmers to better plan their activities.
Moreover, it provides a special impetus to major capacity-building efforts for young agronomists, applied botanists and extension workers. The knowledge base is designed and developed in such way to enable capacity building by taking into account the non-expert background of the intended audience and local language question.

Open (Re)source for Commerce in Horticulture aided by species Identification Systems (ORCHIS)

The project aims to enhance the export capabilities of Lao PDR in the valuable flora of the country by promoting best practices in trade aided by open source based IT&C tools furthering the integration of Lao PDR in information society. The project also aims at reinforcing institutional capabilities of Lao PDR to better adhere to international commitments made in conventions like CITES by preventing illegal trade of red-listed orchid species. To reach these goals extensive field work is being carried out to collect all necessary data to be integrated in the IDAO knowledge base which will identify orchids of Laos. It is an on going project and the final product of the identification software of orchids will be launched in form of CD Rom and Open Source version at the end of 2008.

Mangroves v1.0. A multimedia identification system of mangroves species of South-East India and Sri Lanka

Mangroves is a graphical identification system of plant species, the only tool of its kind available on South-Asian Mangroves at present. The system, entirely graphic, enables non-specialists to make determinations with the help of just a small number of characters, chosen according to their availability for the particular plant to be identified. It meets the needs of amateur botanists, agronomists, forest officers and nature lovers with a keen sense of observation. The use of frequently observable vegetative characters has been favored, as well as an extensive illustration of species.
The major part of the work presented in the form of CD-ROM was carried out in the framework of the European Commission funded project entitled “Assessment of mangroves degradation and resilience in the Indian subcontinent: The cases of Godavari Estuary and southwest Sri Lanka”.

Pollen grains of South Indian trees V.1.0 - A user-friendly multimedia identification software

An electronic pollen flora including digital and scanning electron micrographs and descriptions distinguishes itself by the graphic identification system of pollen without the plethora of terms; it enables many levels of users (in South India as well as in the tropics, subtropics and sub-temperate regions in India, Asia and other continents) to learn palynology by the "click of the mouse". The descriptive part furnishes palynological terms linked to the illustrated definitions and the bibliographic link for quick reference. Pollen Typification; and Taxonomical, Ecological and Distributional notes for the selected 147 genera (Mangroves: 11, Western Ghats: 129 and others: 7) are also given. A microtaxonomic, research tool, adapted from IDAO will aid "users" interested in climate related past vegetational changes.

A multimedia identification software of the forests of Tan Phu

Tan Phu Trees, is a graphical identification system of the tree species of Tan Phu forest - Dong Nai Province - Vietnam

Trees of Sahel

"Ligneux du Sahel V.1.0" is a taxonomic identification tool of tree species in West African Area. This work presents 347 ligneous species. The identification tool has been realized based on vegetative and sexual characters. The species are illustrated by 1 600 photos. Numerous distribution maps have also been included.

Adventrop

Advenrun

"Advenrun V.1.0 - Principales mauvaises herbes de la Réunion" is an identification and information software of hundred weeds of the Reunion island.
